What ACE COMBAT ONLINE includes

Bandai Namco describes ACE COMBAT ONLINE as the series’ largest online mode and confirms the series’ first online lobby. That lobby is an explorable air base rather than only a static menu. Players can also use a customizable avatar inside the online space.

The published activity categories include online missions, Online Co-op, Online PvP, and cross-platform play. Japanese official specifications set the online maximum at eight players. The Xbox Store provides the more specific current metadata of 4–8 players for both Online Co-op and Online Multiplayer.

Those facts define the framework, not a complete launch manual. Official P0 sources have not yet published the full mode names, scoring systems, round structure, mission rotation, matchmaking tiers, or progression rules. This guide therefore separates confirmed capabilities from the launch-week fields that remain TBD.

The online lobby and avatar

The explorable air base is the entry point Bandai Namco has described for ACE COMBAT ONLINE. Official text says players can gather in this lobby and customize an avatar. It does not yet provide a complete map, interaction list, maximum lobby population, or menu flow.

Avatar customization is confirmed as a feature, but the available body options, outfits, unlock methods, currencies, and cross-platform ownership rules remain TBD. The existence of a Tasha Costume Set in Deluxe Edition materials does not establish how every avatar item is earned or shared. This page does not convert one named cosmetic product into a full customization system.

The lobby should also not be assumed to work like an open-world social hub from another game. Voice chat, text chat, emotes, inspection, squad formation, ready checks, training spaces, and reporting tools are not fully documented in the current sources. They belong in the pending block until official instructions or release testing confirms them.

Online PvP

Steam explicitly lists Online PvP, while Xbox lists Online Multiplayer for 4–8 players. These fields confirm competitive online play and a current Xbox range. They do not identify every competitive mode, team size, score limit, aircraft restriction, or victory condition.

No verified source used here provides a ranked playlist, casual playlist, free-for-all mode, team battle name, seasonal ladder, skill rating, penalty system, or bot-fill rule. Those familiar multiplayer concepts cannot be imported from earlier Ace Combat games. The page will add them only when Ace Combat 8’s official materials or released build confirms them.

The game’s aircraft and parts systems may affect multiplayer preparation, but complete balance and restriction rules are not published. One confirmed example is the Season 1 ADFX-02 Morgan–PIXY, which Bandai Namco says can be used online. That fact does not prove that every aircraft, campaign unlock, special weapon, or cosmetic has identical availability in every playlist.

Co-op

Ace Combat 8 co-op is confirmed as an online feature inside ACE COMBAT ONLINE. Bandai Namco says players can sortie into online missions with pilots worldwide in a variety of modes including Co-op. Xbox’s official capability field lists Online Co-op for 4–8 players.

The 4–8 range must remain attached to the Xbox listing. It does not confirm that every co-op mission always uses eight pilots, that two- or three-player private rooms are impossible, or that matchmaking will launch with a partially filled lobby. Minimum group behavior and private-room rules remain TBD.

The current official categories do not label the single-player Campaign as co-op. “Online missions” therefore cannot be rewritten as “the full story campaign supports co-op.” The relationship between co-op missions and campaign locations, objectives, progression, cutscenes, or unlocks is unresolved.

Mission count, difficulty scaling, respawn rules, shared lives, failure conditions, reward distribution, repeat rewards, friendly fire, drop-in play, and host migration are not published. These are launch-week verification targets, not omissions to fill with series precedent. Until then, the safe answer is that online co-op exists for 4–8 players on the Xbox capability listing, while its detailed mission rules are TBD.

Crossplay

Ace Combat 8 crossplay is officially supported across the published platform families: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC through Steam. Bandai Namco’s Europe page confirms cross-platform play, and the Steam and Xbox storefronts both display a Cross-Platform Multiplayer capability. This is a supported feature, not a community inference.

Crossplay does not include cross-platform save transfer. The Japanese official specification marks cross-platform play as supported and platform-to-platform cross-save as unsupported. A player should not expect campaign progress, purchases, aircraft unlocks, pass progress, or settings to move between platforms without a separate official entitlement statement.

The cross-platform friend-search, invitation, room-creation, and party-join workflow is not yet published. It is also TBD whether a Bandai Namco ID is required, how any account link is created or removed, and whether crossplay is enabled by default. The page cannot provide accurate button-by-button setup steps before that interface is documented.

Cross-platform voice, text, moderation, block lists, reports, bans, regional servers, platform-only filters, and opt-out behavior also remain unresolved. Crossplay support guarantees compatibility at the feature level; it does not answer every social and safety workflow. Those details will be tested and source-labeled after release.

Player count and platform requirements

Japanese official specifications say offline play is one player and online play supports up to eight. Xbox separately lists 4–8 for Online Co-op and 4–8 for Online Multiplayer. PlayStation’s store says up to eight online players, while Steam confirms online categories without publishing the same numerical range in the collected metadata.

PlayStation console online play requires PlayStation Plus. Xbox console online multiplayer requires an eligible Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate tier according to the current store wording. These are access requirements for console online play, not proof that the base game is included in either subscription catalog.

The current P0 evidence does not confirm whether PC players need a separate Bandai Namco account in addition to Steam. It also does not document platform-specific parental controls, NAT behavior, network ports, dedicated servers, peer-to-peer hosting, or regional data-center locations. Those technical access fields remain TBD.

How to join multiplayer

A complete step-by-step join process cannot be published before the online interface is documented. The verified high-level flow is to use ACE COMBAT ONLINE, enter its air-base lobby, prepare an avatar, and select an online activity. Exact menu names, required tutorials, unlock conditions, queue controls, and party steps remain TBD.

At launch, the guide will verify whether multiplayer is immediately available, whether a campaign milestone is required, and how platform friends or cross-platform players are added. It will also record the minimum group size for private co-op, the available public and private room settings, and the effect of changing crossplay preferences. Until then, fabricated instructions would be less useful than a visible verification checklist.

Before attempting console online play, ensure the account has the required platform subscription and review regional service terms. PC requirements are covered on the system requirements page. Network quality, outages, maintenance, and matchmaking population are dynamic conditions and cannot be guaranteed by this fan guide.

Source and update policy

The online lobby, air base, avatar, Co-op, and cross-platform statements come from Bandai Namco Europe. Player maximum and cross-save status come from the Japanese official specification. Xbox supplies the 4–8 capability ranges and subscription wording, while Steam confirms Online PvP, Online Co-op, and Cross-Platform Multiplayer.

All pre-release facts were checked August 30, 2026. Xbox-specific ranges stay labeled to Xbox, and missing rules stay TBD. No earlier Ace Combat mode name or network behavior is copied into this guide without current-game evidence.

This page should receive a launch-week functional test covering every pending field, followed by updates when seasons or multiplayer patches change playlists and rules.
